Morris told me something quite curious by mail today: That the Oscar nominations would've been today but because of Obama's inauguration were instead pushed to Thursday, coincidentally Heath Ledger's first death anniversary in which he'll surely be nominated as Best Actor in a Supporting Role which, odds indicate, he'll go on to win.

The question I have for Morris is: what would be happening if Heath was alive?

Some people, mainly "Dark Knight" dissenters, have said that all of this wouldn't be happening had he been alive. Maybe the nomination, but not the win.

Truth is, there's absolutely no supporting performance this year that has garnered as much universal impact and acclaim. Back in July people said we would have to wait to see what the year had in store for us. We're at that point right now, and even though there have been truly excellent stand-out supporting performances none have been able to dethrone Heath's, at least in the opinion of the majority since this kind of stuff is always relative.

We still don't know if he really is going to win, but a different scenario would be improbable at this point. We'll see...
